Shibata Zeshin was a lacquer artist and painter representing Japan, active from the late Edo into the Meiji period. From childhood he studied painting under Suzuki Nanrei, and through superlative technique and rich creativity he transcended the conventional notion of lacquer art to produce numerous masterworks.
Particularly in urushi-e — painting executed with lacquer on paper or silk — he established an original mode of expression combining realism and lyricism, earning the highest acclaim. Taking flowers and plants, insects, small animals, and nature as his subjects, his works are characterized by delicate observation, refined aesthetic sensibility, and serene wit.
Also during the Meiji period, through his exhibits at international expositions, he played an important role in conveying the appeal of Japanese art to the world. Today as well, his innovativeness and elegant style continue to receive high acclaim and to captivate many enthusiasts both at home and abroad.
Shibata Zeshin's works are distinguished by an original expression that combines superlative realism with playful wit. Using lacquer alone, he realized brushwork as delicate as painting itself, and his pieces taking flowers and plants, insects, and birds and beasts as subjects — capturing in a single moment the fragments of nature — possess a charm filled with refined beauty and serenity.
Furthermore, his technique of depicting the imitation of bronze or splits in old wood through lacquer is also superb, capable of magnificently expressing the materiality of substances. At first glance simple, his works contain a touch of refinement and humor — this too constitutes a major part of Zeshin's allure.
Grounded in traditional lacquer techniques, while taking up free expressions that transcend convention, he stands as an existence that crossed the borders between craft and painting, and is highly regarded today.
