Seikōzan is a Satsuma ware workshop active in Kobe during the Meiji period. Amid the thriving exports of the Meiji period, it produced many works equipped with delicate enamel painting and high decorative technique, earning high acclaim from Western collectors.
Known by maker's marks such as "Dai-Nippon Kōbei Seikōzan zō," it is positioned as one of the workshops representing Kobe Satsuma. Its works are held in collections and museums both in Japan and abroad, and it remains today highly regarded as one of the workshops symbolizing the golden age of Meiji craftsmanship.
True to its name (literally "Precision Mountain"), Seikōzan's works are distinguished by enamel painting and ornament of utmost precision. Filling vessels with figural groups, flowers and birds, scenes of customs and manners, and employing gold lavishly, they have mastered a brilliant expression.
Particularly the level of microscopic depiction is extraordinarily high, and they are evaluated as one of the most virtuoso of works representing Meiji Satsuma. The delicate brushwork and overwhelming density of information — revealed only when one looks closely — continue to captivate many enthusiasts.
