Namikawa Sōsuke was one of the leading cloisonné masters of the Meiji period and a pivotal figure in the dramatic development of Japanese cloisonné as an art form.
Renowned for establishing the technique of musen-shippō (wireless cloisonné) — without the use of metal wires — he transformed the expressive possibilities of the medium. His works combine cloisonné with painterly beauty, earning the highest acclaim at exhibitions both in Japan and abroad.
Together with Namikawa Yasuyuki of Kyoto, he was appointed Imperial Household Artist (Teishitsu Gigeiin). His exceptional technique and artistic vision have secured his unshakable place in the history of Japanese craftsmanship.

Namikawa Sōsuke's works are distinguished by their revolutionary technique and exceptional artistic merit. Their defining feature lies in musen-shippō — cloisonné without metal wires — which allowed him to achieve the delicate gradations and seamless smoothness of painting.
