Honda Kōsaburō was a master of Owari cloisonné active from the Meiji to early Shōwa periods. He is recognized as one of the artists who supported the golden age of Owari cloisonné, centered in Aichi Prefecture. He exhibited at numerous international and domestic expositions and earned high acclaim.
Possessing both consummate technique and artistic vision, he left behind many works and contributed greatly to the development of modern cloisonné art. As an artist representing Japanese cloisonné from the Meiji to early Shōwa periods, his name is still highly regarded today, and his works are held in museums and collections both in Japan and abroad.
Honda Kōsaburō is known for being one of the cloisonné artists most fond of ancient figural designs. He produced works that drew on classical mythological figures and antique motifs as subject matter, employing extraordinarily fine cloisons throughout.
Particularly distinctive is his density, which can well be called virtuoso craftsmanship (chōzetsu-gikō). The complex interplay of motifs is composed without the slightest disorder, and the expression of refined classical beauty is among his greatest charms.
