Hayashi Kodenji was one of the leading cloisonné artists active during the Meiji period, devoting himself to the development of cloisonné production centered in Nagoya. Standing shoulder to shoulder with Namikawa Sōsuke of Tokyo and Namikawa Yasuyuki of Kyoto — both honored as Imperial Household Artists — he is recognized as one of the great masters representing Meiji-period cloisonné.
He is also credited as one of the first to export Japanese cloisonné to international markets. Working primarily in the technique of wired cloisonné (yūsen-shippō), he produced many works that combined ornamental beauty with exceptional finish, earning high acclaim both in Japan and abroad.

Within the Owari cloisonné tradition, many works feature intricate flowers-and-birds compositions, and Kodenji produced numerous masterpieces in this style.
Among them, his works stand out for the delicacy of their flowing lines, the precision of their motifs, and the beauty of their colors — achieving a level of finish that immediately distinguishes them from those of his contemporaries.
His meticulous attention to detail and refined sense of dignity give his works a singular presence among Meiji-period cloisonné, embodying the very essence of what makes cloisonné so captivating.
