A masterwork by Tōgawa Sōsuke, Artist to the Imperial Household (Teishitsu Gigei-in). Against a background that transitions in delicate gradation from pale green to soft grey, weeping cherry branches and a solitary swallow are depicted in flight.
The cherry blossoms are rendered in the musen (wireless) cloisonné technique invented by Namikawa Sōsuke himself. The reverse of the plate is entirely covered with scattered cherry blossoms.
