A masterwork by Namikawa, Artist to the Imperial Household (Teishitsu Gigei-in). The blossoms, the plumage of the birds, and the rim have all been rendered in the musen (wireless) cloisonné technique.
The background transitions in a beautiful gradation from soft grey to azure. The branches, by contrast, employ the wired (yūsen) technique.
Whereas the wired portions of many cloisonné works — such as the rim mounting — tend to darken over time, here the black lines were intentionally used from the moment of creation. This deliberate choice imbues the wired lines with the fluid grace of ink-brush painting, giving the composition its distinctive painterly quality.
