This is a piece of exceptional refinement, executed on the deep, subdued indigo ground characteristic of Hayashi Kodenji's oeuvre. The rich indigo not only heightens the translucent luminosity and lustrous quality of the cloisonné, but also imbues the work with an atmosphere of dignified elegance.
This is an extremely rare work in which the design is executed entirely in gold wire. Whereas silver wire is more commonly employed, here the motif is composed solely of gold wire — its opulent brilliance and sumptuous finish immediately reveal that this is an extraordinary piece.
The wisteria composition harmoniously unites the graceful curves of the gracefully cascading blossom clusters with the delicate radiance of the fine gold wire. Set against the deep indigo ground, the gold wire further heightens the exquisite grace of the wisteria, revealing subtle expressions under shifting light — a beauty that captivates all who behold it.
