A cloisonné work by the eminent artist Andō Jūbei.
Against a crystal-clear water-blue ground, white lotus blossoms and softly rendered green lotus leaves are depicted — a cloisonné piece imbued with dignified elegance. The luminously translucent pale blue background gives rise to a serene and refreshingly cool aesthetic world.
The lotus blossoms are rendered with rich dimensional presence through pure white petals and delicate gradations of shading, while the lotus leaves — varying in size, color, and form — vividly evoke the natural drift of the water's surface. Furthermore, small fish playfully swimming beneath the water are subtly incorporated, creating a composition in which the breath of life is felt even amid profound tranquility.
The design, which skillfully employs generous negative space, evokes a high level of artistic refinement while restraining ornamental exuberance.
