  • Namikawa Yasuyuki

    [Kōka 2 (1845) – Shōwa 2 (1927)]

One of the leading cloisonné artists of the Meiji period, active primarily in Kyoto. He received a total of thirty-one awards at international and domestic exhibitions.

With his distinctive palette, forms, and designs, he created works of singular character and enduring appeal that continue to captivate collectors around the world today.

Devoted to the pursuit of beauty throughout his life, he is a great cloisonné master who elevated wired cloisonné (yūsen-shippō) to the realm of fine art.

  • Namikawa Sōsuke

    [Kōka 4 (1847) – Meiji 43 (1910)]

One of the leading cloisonné artists of the Meiji period, active primarily in Tokyo.

Seeking to translate the qualities of Japanese painting (nihonga) into the medium of cloisonné, he invented the technique of musen-shippō (wireless cloisonné).

Works produced in this technique received high acclaim at exhibitions in Japan and abroad. In recognition of his achievements, he was appointed Imperial Household Artist (Teishitsu Gigeiin) alongside Namikawa Yasuyuki of Kyoto — and the two unrelated masters came to be celebrated together as the "Two Namikawas."

  • Hayashi Kodenji

    [Tenpō 2 (1831) – Taishō 4 (1915)]

Born in Tōshima Village, Kaitō District, Owari Province (present-day Aichi Prefecture). In 1861 (Bunkyū 1), he studied the techniques of cloisonné under Hayashi Shōgorō.

He sold his works to foreign buyers in the newly opened port of Yokohama, becoming one of the pioneers of cloisonné export under the early Meiji government.

In 1887 (Meiji 20), he founded the Nagoya Cloisonné Association, and in 1894 (Meiji 27) he established a cloisonné training school.
